Discover ESSIAL’s External Advisory Board

The ESSIAL’s External Advisory Board (EAB) has been appointed to allow an efficient management of the innovation in the project. The Board is composed of 3 industrial experts from big steel manufacturing companies: ArcelorMittal, APERAM and Brockhaus Measurements.

The EAB focuses on the market needs in order to give to the consortium the keys to improve its research/products and to come up with creative ideas. Actions of the EAB include:

  • Ensuring that the project is properly and appropriately exploited.
  • Analysis of the Technical Annex and proposition of a list of exploitable results.
  • Identification of results & knowledge generated by the project through successive steps.
  • Analysis and review of the successive dissemination and exploitation plans to provide further guidance steps for better actions.
  • Provide strategic advice for the quality improvement of the project regarding the content and the execution of the work plan.

Sigrid Jacobs - ArcelorMittal group

Sigrid Jacobs is Expert in Electrical Steels in the ArcelorMittal group. She holds the 1906 AWARD of the International Electrotechnical Commission, for her contributions to the Technical Committee of Magnetic Alloys and Steels.

According to Sigrid: “The evolution towards a sustainable economy and lifestyle is strongly intertwined with green electrification, in which electrical equipment plays an important role. ESSIAL aims at increasing the efficiency of electrical machines and transformers by improving their electromagnetic losses.  The increase in performance of the electrical steels, of which the cores of this electric machinery are built, is an ongoing quest since many years.  The novel approach proposed for the optimisation of the magnetic domain structure of electrical steels is a very interesting key topic in ESSIAL.  The laser treatments proposed have the potential to bring relevant benefits.  Not only the reduction of greenhouse gases is targeted, but also the reduction of noise of machines, so the project combines efficiency with comfort feature improvements.

I consider my role in the EAB, to bring the industrial viewpoint to the university teams, as well as showing the wider view of the electrical steels’ R&D context that has been evolving over the years.  This should bring the researchers a broader perspective, in their contribution in the scientific progress of electrical steels.  Obviously, the industrial applicability of the outcome of the project is of interest.”

Thierry Waeckerlé - APERAM

Thierry Waeckerlé is responsible for Research and Development of magnetic alloys at the APERAM Research Center in Imphy (France). He is a senior expert in metallurgy and magnetism, and more interested in understanding the evolution of current or future applications to imagine the most suitable magnetic material solutions.

Thierry says: “ESSIAL is a structure that is particularly suited not only to laser-magnetic domain interactions… but to interactions between the various academic or industrial players from the sometimes rather distant worlds of magnetism, electrical engineering, lasers, metallurgy.

To increase the effectiveness, efficiency and probability of success of the operations carried out by ESSIAL, it must be surrounded by knowledgeable advisers, facilitators and networks of relevant knowledge. Through me, APERAM is an industrial player that will help ESSIAL move towards potentially fruitful and promising R&D projects.

From ESSIAL, I expect innovative, exploratory actions in various fields of interaction between soft magnetic materials and lasers. Why not wait for the genesis of interesting projects directly from APERAM. I am awaiting the start of a dynamic around laser - magnetic material interactions in the later stages of industrial processes. I expect a real constructive interaction between the partners, the main chance to move on to potentially profitable subjects.

Piotr Klimczyk - Brockhaus Measurements

Piotr Klimczyk is the Head of R&D at Brockhaus Measurements, specialized in development of measurement systems for soft and hard magnetic materials. In the ESSIAL project he is a part of the External Advisory Board. The ESSIAL’s External Advisory Board (EAB) has been appointed to allow an efficient management of the innovation in the project.
